How I Stay Energetic Amidst Chaos

Happy Sunday Coach,

As the founder of Busy Coach, a company dedicated to training coaches to be high performers in their careers, I’m often asked how I manage to maintain my energy and productivity, especially with my hectic schedule.

And recently, a friend of mine sent me a text in all caps after I saw him at the Soccer Coaches Convention that said, “DON’T YOU EVER GET TIRED?” I’ve watched what you have been doing over your career. How are you not burned out?

I certainly have a lot going on in my world.  I work with hundreds of clients.  I speak to thousands of coaches throughout the year.  I have done 25+ workshops and spoke at multiple conferences over the course of this last year.  I run multiple programs/courses.  I am a wife and mom to 2 kids (who are annoyingly telling me that they are getting as tall as me now), and have 2 huge dogs that want a lot of attention.

So first and foremost, of course, I’m human. I get tired. But I believe I get tired less than most people because I put into play a few key practices.

The secret to how I’ve managed to sustain my energy and enthusiasm for over two decades comes down to a few fundamental turning points in my life, and I’m excited to reveal them to you.

  1. High Performance Habits

The first turning point was discovering the power of high-performance habits. While many people focus on small atomic habits, I opted for something bigger – high performance habits.

They’re different.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend reading the book “High Performance Habits” by Brendon Burchard.  In the book, he breaks down the research from the world’s most successful people and teaches strategies related to high performance habits about how to live your life, organize your life, and succeed while still maintaining your health and relationships at positive levels.

Why is this important? Well, I’ve always believed that success shouldn’t come at the cost of your health and relationships.

Most people as they go onto succeed, wreck their relationships and they wreck their wellness.

And if anything, I’ve learned how not to wreck those things by studying what the best do.

For example, one habit I have been practicing is gaining clarity for what I want and don’t want.

I found the more you are lacking in clarity on what you want and don’t want, the more you run to all the distractions, and you exhaust your mind.

Another habit I have developed is my ability to generate and manage my energy effectively.

I’d be the first to tell you that I’m not genetically gifted with boundless energy – I’ve had to train myself. I take my energy seriously, and it’s a priority in my life.

If you hung out with me for a week, you would see a tremendous amount of time dedicated to thinking through my energy, my workouts, my food, my recovery, my naps, my mindset, etc.

These are fueling stations that keep me going. It’s not about never getting tired; it’s about getting tired less often and recovering faster.

I am constantly releasing tension. I’m constantly refueling. I’m constantly recalibrating and aiming my energy to allow me to not only sustain it, but to amplify it.

  1. I Use a High-Performance Planner.

I used to be random and disorganized. (Still am some days)

I had to teach myself to get in a good mindset, to organize my day, to review my day, and review my habits.

I have bought and tried pretty much every planner out there.

I ended up creating my own planner after studying all these people, because I found out that they really work on their mindset in the morning, much more than I was doing.  They also were very diligent about writing down their prioritized agenda for the day, and then they ended the day by journaling and scoring habits.

I found these habits helped prevent procrastination, distraction, and I started to make progress faster because I was focused on doing the 20% that was going to move the needle.

After I have done 90 minutes of work on a needle mover, I also engage in a morning mindset journaling session in my planner. It sets a positive tone for the day, organizes my thoughts, and helps me visualize my goals. At night, I engage in gratitude journaling, which fosters a sense of appreciation and positivity for what I get to do, even on challenging days.  Journaling has significantly contributed to my mental and emotional well-being.

You might be surprised by the mental and emotional release that comes from simply journaling consistently for a few days. Give it a try; the results can be transformative.

  1. Organizing Life Around Great Loves

Lastly, I’ve organized my life around what I truly love. This includes activities like learning, teaching, coaching, creating, exercising, and spending time with my husband and kids. By prioritizing these passions, I’m constantly filled with energy and enthusiasm.

I’m not draining myself all day doing things that I don’t love.

This wasn’t an instant shift where I organized my entire life in 1 month.

It was a series of decisions to live a life aligned with my values and interests.  I had to have the courage to ask myself what isn’t working?  What makes me feel bad? Who drains my energy?

I went to work.  Let me try this. Let me try that. Let me try this. Let me try that. Oh, I like this, I need to do more of it. Oh, here’s a distinction about how to do that better and optimize it and efficiently do it in an organized way. Okay, I can feel better doing this because I’m not overwhelmed.

By going through this process over may months and years, I ended up creating all these systems for success (Which I teach in High Performance Coach and Recruiter.  A new session is coming up soon)

I challenge you to evaluate your own life and find ways to incorporate more of what you love into your daily routine. It’s a game-changer.

Trust me, there’s still plenty of days that I don’t sleep well. I get stressed or overwhelmed.  Or maybe I didn’t eat right, or I didn’t get the number of workouts in I wanted and my body and mind can feel lethargic.

But I found that when I was consistent about my habits, I used my planner, and I was intentional about doing things that I loved, I was so much better prepared to get back on track.

No matter what situation you are in, there is something you can do to adjust your mindset, to adjust your attitude, to adjust what you eat, to adjust how you move, to adjust when you move, to adjust who you hang around with, etc.

All of these little course corrections you make are helping you dialing in what you need to do on a daily basis to be a high performer over the course of your career.

So, this is your reminder. Do the training. Do the mindset work. Do the good habits. You’re setting yourself up for success this year. The more you train these things now, the more you will be able to deal with even more difficulty in the future.

To your success in 2024,
