How to be More Productive During your Morning Commute
As coaches, we spend a good amount of time in the car commuting to work. Depending on where you live or work your commute may range from a few minutes to a few hours every day.
A lot of coaches I know use that car time to listen to music because it relaxes them and puts them in a good mood. Some like to get caught up on the news. For those who are interested in learning how to use your commute to be more productive, I want to share a few of my favorite ways to be productive while driving in the car.
Make Your Phone Read Email Messages to You
Even though we know we shouldn’t, let’s be honest, most of us check our emails occasionally while in the car driving. I have been working really hard to stop this habit for obvious reasons and I think I found a solution. I recently learned of an app that reads your emails to you. How cool is that? This allows you to check your emails while traveling during your morning commute and save regular office hours for more important work.
The app is called Talkler . It’s a free app that not only allows you to have your emails read to you, it also enables you to delete them as you go or reply with recordings. That means you can keep both hands on the wheel (or holding the subway pole) and still be productive en route to the office. And good news: It works on exchange platforms as well as most other email providers.
Listening to audiobooks or podcasts
As coaches, we need to stay on top of all of the latest and greatest recruiting, team building, communication, or our sport specific strategies. Commuting gives you more time to learn new things about all sorts of topics. First, you can listen to different podcasts to hear about the latest industry trends. Or you could listen to audiobooks, which is also a great way to good use of your commute time. Audible through amazon is my favorite place to get audiobooks. What I love about listening to audio books as well, is that sometimes there just isn’t much time to sit and read a book. Audiobooks are a great way to multitask by blasting through your reading list while driving to and from work.
Brainstorm problem solutions
In my 18 years as a coach, I have found that no two days are the same and there are numerous problems that come up. Coming up with the best solutions can be demanding and time-consuming, and the stress can dampen your creativity. Your old familiar commute gives your brain a chance to relax and come up with creative ideas. I sometimes like to drive without any books, podcasts, or music on so I can just watch the road and think. As long as my kids are not in the car, this drive time gives me a few moments to ruminate on the biggest problem I want to solve that day.
Those 3 things you could do while driving in your car are some of my favorite ways to set myself up to be productive.
Please hit reply to this email and let me know how you use your morning commute.
