Your permission to say no

Feb 03, 2025

I’m not sure about you, but at the start of every new year it feels like the world tells us we need to hit the ground running with big, audacious goals.

Don’t get me wrong—I love a good goal. But here’s the truth: sometimes, the best way to move forward is to pause, reflect, and ask yourself what you truly want to carry with you this year.

One of the biggest lessons I learned over the course of my career is that success in coaching isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what truly matters.

That’s where anti-goals come in—the things you intentionally say no to so you can make room for what aligns with your vision and values.

This year, I’m unapologetically saying no to anything that is unaligned with my purpose as a wife, mom, and business owner, and I want to encourage you to do the same. Whether it’s simplifying your coaching philosophy, redefining what success looks like for your program, or just making space for rest and reflection, trust that you’re exactly where you need to be.

Even though the year is already underway, it’s never too late to set intentional goals. To help you ease into 2025 with focus, here’s an activity to guide your reflection:

Your Coaching Anti-Goals Activity

1.    Reflect – Take 10 minutes to list out all the things in your coaching career that drained your energy in January. What felt like busywork? What pulled you away from what truly matters to your program and athletes?

2.    Identify – Review your list and circle the top three things you no longer want to carry into the rest of 2025. These could be unnecessary meetings, an outdated game strategy, or even self-doubt.

3.    Replace – For each anti-goal, decide what you’ll replace it with. Maybe you’ll say no to excessive administrative tasks and delegate more, or perhaps you’ll set clearer boundaries to protect your time and energy.

4.    Commit – Write these commitments down and keep them visible. Revisit them throughout the year to ensure you’re staying true to what truly matters.

Coaching isn’t just about strategy and wins—it’s about leading with intention, staying aligned with your values, and making a lasting impact.

Even though January has passed, you still have plenty of time to focus on what truly moves the needle for you and your program.
