The High-Leverage Activities You Can’t Afford to Ignore

Oct 17, 2024

You wear a lot of hats as a college coach.

From recruiting to team culture building, to administrative work, to fundraising, to game planning, our days are packed with tasks that pull us in a hundred different directions.

But here’s the truth: not all tasks are created equal. If you want to build a winning program, you need to focus on high-leverage activities that bring the most value.

A lot of those high leverage tasks that bring the most value have nothing to do with daily operations.

I’ll say this.  Winning is simple: wake up every day and do the things everyone else avoids.

Let’s be honest—it's easy to get caught up in low-impact tasks like filing, organizing, or sorting through non-recruiting emails.

These tasks feel productive, but they’re often just a way to hide from the pressure that comes with high-stakes activities. And yes, I’ve been there too. Many times over the course of my coaching career, I found myself bogged down in the operational side of things.

But if I am being honest, I chose to spend my time there because it was comfortable and low-pressure. But comfort doesn’t win championships.

High-leverage activities, on the other hand, are where the magic happens. This is where you’re planning, fundraising, and recruiting. It’s where you’re getting in front of the right people, negotiating, and making decisions that directly impact the future of your program. These tasks come with pressure, but they also come with the biggest rewards.

So, what’s the action plan?

1.   Time Block for High-Value Tasks: Ensure your prime working hours are dedicated to high-leverage activities like recruiting, fundraising, or strategic planning. Block out this time and guard it fiercely.

2.   Delegate Low-Impact Tasks: Automate, delegate, or outsource the tasks that don’t move the needle. Your time is too valuable to be spent on activities that don’t directly contribute to your program’s success.

3.   Embrace the Pressure: Don’t shy away from tasks that come with friction. These are the tasks that will push your program forward.

Remember, the key to success isn’t doing more—it’s doing more of what matters. Start focusing on high-leverage activities today and watch your progress and confidence soar!!

To your success,
