You ever notice how the best programs aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets, the most staff, or the fanciest facilities? Sure, those things can help, but there’s one hidden trait that the most successful coaches share—it’s their obsession with simplicity.
Think about it. The best teams don’t overcomplicate things. They focus on executing the basics at a high level. The best recruiters? They don’t get lost in endless databases of prospects—they focus on having meaningful conversations with the right recruits. The most effective head coaches? They don’t drown in an overwhelming to-do list—they narrow their focus to what truly moves the needle.
Let me share why this matters and how you can apply it right now.
Step 1: Delete Until It Hurts (Then Delete One More Thing)
As coaches, we always feel like we need to do more. More meetings. More strategies. More recruiting tactics. But the real key to growth isn’t adding—it’s subtracting.
I love this story about Steve Jobs. His team spent three months designing a DVD-burning system with tons of features. When they proudly presented it, Steve walked to the whiteboard, drew a rectangle, and wrote two words: “Drag” and “Burn.” That’s it. That’s what the product became. It was wildly successful because it solved one simple problem in the easiest way possible.
Now, think about your coaching.
- What could you delete from your recruiting process that isn’t actually helping?
- What meetings or administrative tasks are sucking up time but not adding value?
- What outdated systems are slowing you down?
Take a hard look at everything you do and start cutting.
Step 2: Simplify What Remains
Once you’ve trimmed the excess, make what’s left crystal clear. Amazon revolutionized online shopping with one-click ordering. Before that, online purchases had too many steps, too many decisions. One click changed everything.
How does this apply to you?
- If your recruiting pitch is full of long-winded explanations, simplify it. What’s the one message you want recruits to remember?
- If your practice plans are overcomplicated, streamline them. What’s the one goal for each session?
- If your staff is confused about expectations, make it clear. What’s the one focus for this week?
You don’t win by overwhelming people with information—you win by giving them clarity.
Step 3: Accelerate
Only when things are simple can you move faster.
Think about Apple’s marketing:
- iPod: “1,000 songs in your pocket.”
- iPhone: “Three devices in one.”
- MacBook Air: “The world’s thinnest notebook.”
One message. One promise. One clear action.
Now think about your program:
- What’s one sentence that describes what makes your team different?
- What’s one clear outcome a recruit gets if they commit?
- What’s one simple system that will make your job easier?
If you’re throwing five different messages at recruits, they’ll catch none of them. But if you laser in on one, it sticks.
Your Simplicity Audit
Let’s put this into action. Take five minutes and do this:
- Message Audit: What’s the core message of your program? Can you simplify it?
- Recruiting Audit: Look at your process. What’s unnecessary? What can you remove?
- Staff & Workflow Audit: Where are things getting bogged down? What’s one thing you can streamline this week?
Coach, complexity isn’t a badge of honor—it’s a distraction. Simplicity is what creates clarity, speed, and success.
Your next big breakthrough won’t come from adding more, but from having the courage to take something away.
