Fall is here, and that means your team is in full swing with games, practices, and the hustle of a new school year. While this is an exciting time, it can also be overwhelming for you as a coach. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind and let stress creep in. But here’s the truth: You have to schedule your joy to stay happy and healthy.
I’ve been spending a lot of time out in nature, and honestly, it makes me incredibly happy. On top of that, cutting down my smartphone use? Game-changer. These moments of joy aren’t just feel-good breaks; they’re essential to staying sharp, productive, and effective.
I even discussed this with my High-Performance Coach and Recruiter group recently—doing things that make you feel good can dramatically impact your happiness and success. So, why not make time for joy a key part of your schedule?
Here’s an exercise to try: Make a list of things that bring you happiness. Once you have that list, actually do them. The impact on your program, your coaching, and your mental well-being will be profound. Here are a few ideas you might want to consider adding to your list:
1. Listen to music during your workout: This can increase your strength and endurance by up to 23%. It’s an easy way to elevate your energy and mood.
2. Listen to an educational podcast or audiobook: Not only do you learn, but it can also give you that extra edge during your day.
3. Watch what you say to yourself: The way you speak to yourself is critical to your long-term happiness. Your body reacts to your mindset, so stay positive.
4. Hydrate first thing in the morning: A glass of water jump-starts your body faster than caffeine and sets the tone for the day.
5. Smile—even if you don’t feel like it: Just three seconds of smiling can release happiness chemicals in your brain.
6. Knock out a critical task in the morning: Doing something productive right away sets the tone for a successful day.
7. Focus on one thought at a time: You can only hold one thought at a time, so make it a positive one. If negativity creeps in, quickly shift your mindset.
8. Exercise daily: Physical activity not only keeps you in shape but also boosts your mood and resilience.
Ask yourself, do you have a list of things that make you happy? If not, now’s the time to start. Happiness isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for thriving, especially when the pressure is on.
You can’t pour from an empty cup—schedule your joy, and watch how it transforms your coaching, your productivity, and your life.
To your success,
Mandy Green
