To thrive year after year in coaching, you must do two things well:
1. Learn complex things quickly (teenagers, anyone?)
2. Produce high-quality work, fast
That’s why I revisit Deep Work by Cal Newport every year. One quote always jumps out:
"To produce at your peak level, you need to work for extended periods with full concentration on a single task free from distraction."
But let’s be real—deep focus is harder than ever. Your day is full of texts, emails, staff interruptions, and 50 tasks competing for your attention. Still, if you want to lead well and build something great, deep work isn't optional. It’s your edge.
Here’s a 6-step routine to help you lock in.
1. Block Time When You’re Sharpest
Pick a 90-minute window when you’re most alert. For most, that’s the morning. Schedule it. Protect it. Deep work won’t happen by accident.
2. Set a Clear Goal
No vague “get stuff done.” Be specific:
- Plan team practices
- Write recruiting emails
- Map out social content
The clearer the goal, the easier it is to focus.
3. Eliminate Distractions (Proactively)
Turn off notifications. Shut the door. Block websites. Let your staff know you’re off-limits for that time. The fewer distractions, the deeper your focus.
4. Take Recovery Breaks
Deep work is mentally demanding. After 60–90 minutes, take a 20–30 minute break. Walk. Move. Hydrate. Recharge.
5. Designate a Deep Work Spot
Train your brain to associate a space with focus. Office corner, quiet room, or coffee shop—pick one and use it consistently.
6. Use Focus Triggers
Want to get in the zone faster? Try:
- A deadline or timer
- Focus music
- A cup of coffee or your go-to drink
These cues signal “it’s time to lock in.”
Deep Work Is a Skill—Train It It won’t feel natural at first. But neither did practice for your athletes on Day 1. Keep showing up. It gets easier. Soon, deep work becomes part of your daily rhythm—and your competitive advantage.
More clarity. Less chaos. Greater impact.
